The Competition

Seventeen-year-old Avery VanDemere's ridiculously wealthy grandmother has decided to leave the family fortune to the relative who proves him or herself worthiest--by solving puzzles and riddles on a whirlwind race around the globe.

The Contenders

For Avery, the contest offers a chance to escape. As the black sheep of the VanDemere clan--the illegitimate daughter, sent away to boarding school--she'd love to use that prize money to run away from the family who ostracized her . . . and discover the truth about her long-lost mother.

Marshall might be Avery's uncle by blood, but there's no love lost between them. He'll do anything to win, even if it means turning on his own children.

Riley is the charming son of Grandmother VanDemere's lawyer. As the game progresses, Avery finds herself drawn to him--even though she isn't quite sure she can trust him.

The Winner?

Treacherous turns in the competition serve as brutal reminders that only one person can win it all. Is Avery willing to risk both her heart and her life to claim the grand prize?

This book was a great surprise. It was way more entertaining than I thought it was going to be. Avery is the black sheep of the family, her birth causing a scandal that had major effects on her life. She was most recently sent off to boarding school, a military style place so she could be monitored round the clock.

We first meet Avery as she is trying to escape.

I’m a fan of Avery. She’s smart and fearless and resourceful. I like how she snuck out and didn’t want her grandmother’s rule to define her. Riley, her chaperone through the challenges is typical cute and understanding main interest, but that doesn’t make it bad. I like how normal Riley is with Avery as the rest of her family is CRAY! He really stood out because he was such a strong sure rock of a character that she could count on.

And the family. Woah. Think Knives Out style type of family, everyone going crazy for the money money money. It was pretty fun. I sped through reading it in two days and looked forward to seeing what crazy challenges dear old grandma could invent.

The plot is well paced and the characters a little cardboard, but it didn’t bother me. It was more about the challenges and Avery and whom to trust. With a lot hanging in the balance (not only the inheritance but mostly, Avery not having to go back to that school), the danger an urgency was there from the beginning.

Overall, I think Inherit Midnight is a really fun and lively book that a lot of people will enjoy. It has danger and history and crazy characters and just enough romance to satisfy.
