What is a Victorian lady's formula for love? Mix one brilliant noblewoman and her enigmatic protection officer. Add in a measure of danger and attraction. Heat over the warmth of humor and friendship, and the result is more than simple chemistry—it's elemental.

Lady Violet Hughes is keeping secrets. First, she founded a clandestine sanctuary for England's most brilliant female scientists. Second, she is using her genius on a confidential mission for the Crown. But the biggest secret of all? Her feelings for protection officer Arthur Kneland.

Solitary and reserved, Arthur learned the hard way to put duty first. But the more time he spends in the company of Violet and the eccentric club members, the more his best intentions go up in flames. Literally.

When a shadowy threat infiltrates Violet's laboratories, endangering her life and her work, scientist and bodyguard will find all their theories put to the test—and learn that the most important discoveries are those of the heart

Absolutely charming and refreshing romance about a scientist and her bodyguard working on some crown secrets.

This book was such a fun breath of fresh air for me. I usually know what I’m getting when I start to read one of these, but this book sets its own high bar. I love Violet who is recovering from a lonely marriage. I really enjoyed her story of strength, how she moved past her bad marriage and took her future in her own hands. And OMG she is clever and smart. She is a scientist, like super smart.?

Arthur is physically and emotionally hurt from past experiences, whether that is from his time as being an agent for the Queen or his less than wonderful choices and the scandal that followed from his youth. His story line was equally heartfelt as he discovered his own path, trying to come to terms with his new wants. I love him and Grantham’s relationship. I am honestly hoping these two show up together again and again in subsequent books because you can really see their relationship developing.

And of course, I love Violet’s brains and Arthur’s admiration for her. Let her go off on explaining all of these ideas and Arthur would have no idea what she was talking about.. and he loves her anyway. Like, oh you’re super smarter than me honey. I love it. What a turn on!

Yes, there were some steamy bits that actually did add layers to the story. I like how quiet both Violet and Arthur were. The author did a good job at showing these characters’ vulnerabilities, making their development real.

Add in some danger and explosives, lots of very intelligent and remarkable women and a secret society and what more could you want?

I devoured this book faster than you can say scotch.

And you should too.
