Welcome to another edition of What Does the Bookworm Say? This week’s discussion question is: Change It Up! New Vampire Academy Covers! Thoughts?

So first, let’s see what we’re working with:
The Original Covers
There are a lot of wonderful things about these original covers and a lot of things I don’t like about them. I like the slight change in tones through the series, the foreboding gates of the school with the “VA”, the title font in white which leaps out at you. It’s more elegant, scripted and gothic. However, I do not like the models. Sorry, but I am not a big fan of full photographed models on the cover of books. I really like imagining the character for myself and IMO, none of these models represent any of the characters in the book. I know who they’re supposed to be, but I don’t agree.
Here are the new covers:
Alright. So the colors/tone change entirely, the consistency being the “VA”. The models are there, in the background and not very clear. The titles of each of the book is more bold, in your face. But there’s not a whole lot of character or feeling when you look at them. Generic and uniform, the covers loose the fun, dark vampire quality that the originals have.

Now I have to admit, I was never a huge fan of the original covers. But in exchange for these bland new ones, I’m glad I have the original, gothic and deliciously taunting originals.

I totally agree with you. Never a fan of the originals but the new ones are so generic. I always meant to get a set of the UK covers but never did. Now the old covers are kinda nostalgic for me and I have a soft spot for them.
Yeah, I have this odd nostalgic feeling towards the originals too. Which is weird because I didn’t like them at first!
I don’t like either editions…I only recently read Vampire Academy, and although I ordered the original covered, ended up getting the new one sent to me, so I’m collecting those ones now. I think I very slightly prefer the new ones simply because the models aren’t obvious…I don’t like how the models are positioned on the original covers at all. The UK covers on the other hand, are to die for.
Hi Ebony! Totally agree right! I love the UK covers and I do agree with your point- the new covers have LESS model, which I like. Hmm, wish we could all get the UK covers… 🙂

THe new covers are just blah. I like the original covers alright, but they are very generic, too. I must say that I wish I could get copies of the United Kingdom covers. They are gorgeous! And I love how each picture represents the theme of the story.

I’m a huge fan of the VA series and I agree, I didn’t like the models of the first covers but I liked everything else. The new covers lack any sort of characters.. they should’ve at least left the VA fence IMO. The UK covers are pretty, but they don’t have the dark vamp gothic quality either, IMO.

I prefer the UK covers. Ive never been a fan of real faces on ya covers but they are still better than the bland new ones!
