Review: Vow of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

Kazi and Jace are one of my favorite couples. I love how in the first book they were thrown together and had to build their relationship. That relationship has blossomed over time, but can it withstand Jace’s family and a war?

I really like how Kazi and Jace love and respect each other. This book picks up where Dance of Thieves left off and Kazi and Jace are headed back to Tor’s Watch to see Jace’s family and give them some promising news. For much of the book, the two are separated and we are forced to wonder if Kazi and Jace will ever find their way back to each other. I love how Pearson did this because by separating them, it increased the immediate risk for each character exponentially and it allowed us to get a good sense of them as individuals again and not just them as a couple.

The plot is filled with twists and danger and a couple times I really was afraid for these characters. Pearson doesn’t shy away from hard situations and the villain in this story is one of the worst kinds. That said, I felt like the end seemed a little unplausible. 

Overall, I think Vow of Thieves is a solid and satisfying conclusion to this duology but to be honest, I would have just been as happy I Dance of Thieves was a standalone. That’s how good both of these books are. You don’t need them, but you want them anyway.
