Review:
Wow. I can’t believe I waited so long to read this.
Some Quiet Place is a beautiful story of a girl who can’t feel, and an Emotion who haunts her. Elizabeth can’t remember the last time she felt Emotions but she can see them. They can communicate with her as they visit her friends, her family, laying one hand to sooth or to hurt. Courage, Anger, Love they all visit. But none of them can touch Elizabeth. Even Fear, the one Emotion who hangs around her, trying to solve her numbness. Elizabeth’s world is slowly unraveling, bit by bit. Her family knows something is wrong. She has no friends save one. And now something hunts her. Something more dangerous than any Emotion. But why? And how can she protect herself when she can’t remember how she got this way?
Beautifully written, the story flows easily over the pages, gasping the reader by the hand and luring them through a small town, a human boy’s love, another world of beings. Elizabeth, though unable to be touched, is still likeable and caring. She plays the good daughter, but it is clear something is off. She’s not evil, she’s not mean. She is hard to pin down, to get a good sense of. But I think that’s the whole point. I love Fear. I love his devotion, his darkness, the terror he brings. A great broody character with a lot of layers and strength. Joshua is equally enticing. He represents humans, life, love, earth. He’s sweet and teenage and the boy any girl in a contemporary YA romance might fall for.
I really wasn’t sure how this love triangle was going to work itself out. But I’m very very pleased by the end.
I recommend reading this book slowly, savoring every word and moment. The bad harsh violent ones with Elizabeth’s father, the sad depressing ones with her mother, the kisses and coldness, heat and want of Fear and Joshua. Every day I looked forward to picking up this book to read. I loved the language, the story, the tone and setting.
The companion book is out in June and I have it to read now. But I won’t open it just yet.
I’m still in love with the first book. Turning it over and over in my mind.
