Review:
Audrey’s life has taken a turn for the worst. Her mother died and her father, in his grief, has checked out. Her brother Daniel and herself are now being driven away form their home to their old grandmother’s house, someone Audrey barely knows.
On the way there, they stop off at the beautiful Hotel Ruby. And…
And.. well, wow. That was some fun. Think Hotel California meets The Shining. There’s a lot of awesome fun in this book, particularly the certain scene towards the end that involves a fire extinguisher and an attempted murder.
Hotel Ruby is a fun and creepy story about a girl who stumbles into the most beautiful, opulent and old Hollywood hotel you can find. Only to realize maybe you can never check out. I loved the strange nuances of the hotel, how Audrey is kept on a different floor than her father and brother, isolating her. How she befriends the staff. The vicious Catherine. The heartthrob Elias. The concierge Kenneth. Sometimes the dear main character Audrey is a little too slow for me, but just go with it.
There’s a lot of really good creepiness, dark foreshadowing. Young does an excellent job of describing a perfectly beautiful paradise, where everything is amazing and wonderful and.. then what is that nagging sensation that something is not right?!
If you’re in for the night and want to get lost in a fast read, Hotel Ruby is for you. I recommend it for October Halloween reading. It’s got the right amount of suspense and scares for the season.
