In this beautifully illustrated volume, best-selling author and Tolkien scholar David Day presents four decades of research and writing on the lands and inhabitants Middle-earth. Sections of this A-to-Z dictionary are devoted to discussion of the battles, history, beasts, and heroes of Tolkien’s stories. This comprehensive volume on Tolkien’s world also includes an appendix of three primary legends that served as sources for Tolkien’s creations—the Volsunga saga, the Nibelungenlied, and Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle—and more than 200 black-and-white illustrations

This beautiful leather bound book is a culmination of years of research taken about the Tolkien world. Included are gorgeous illustrations and art that will leave the reader mesmerized.

What is not to love?

I showed several friends of mine who are huge Tolkien fans. Their first question was – Where can I buy it? Obviously, once you see it in real life, there is no denying its beauty. I read Lord of the Rings (duh) and The Hobbit (of course) but it’s been a while and this makes me want to jump back into the world. (As well as marathon the films.)

Truthfully, I’ve basically shown everyone I’ve run into after receiving it and they are all blown away.

I really enjoyed reading the discussions of these characters and places in the encyclopedia. I was at once transported back into the story. I loved all of the illustrations and reading about new places and characters I hadn’t met yet or had completely forgotten about! It was like re-reading your favorite book.

I also loved discovering new things about this complex world.

If anything, it makes me want to sit with it and re-read LOTR so I can look things up as I go!

This is a must have for any Tolkien fan. The research and care that went into preparing this encyclopedia is well thought out and completely engrossing. I had no problem reading page after page, slowly peeling back the layers of Middle Earth.

It’s just so beautiful, so…. Precious. 😉
