Give me that Mac ‘n Cheese – Comfort Reading During a Pandemic

Mac ‘n Cheese, the tacos, the ice cream.

My eating and television viewing has also gone back to comfort favorites – The Office, The Avengers, Jane Austen. Love conquers all and good triumphs over evil. And no one is wearing a mask. (Well, unless you’re a superhero!)

My reading list has been similar. I’ve been gravitating towards HEAs and light and fun reading. I’m not ashamed to admit that the pandemic has thrown me for a loop and sometimes, the only thing I can do to stay sane is go back to some comfort food.

So grab a pint of ice cream (or two) and get ready to check out these charming and heartfelt reads that I read during our Stay At Home.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell – I can’t even being to describe how much I loved this book, and more pointedly, how much I needed this book. It has dragons and magic and best friends and worst enemies. And oh, yes, maybe some kissing. I love how this Harry Potter-esque world is familiar and yet totally unique with one chosen one, two enemies and lots of big feelings.

The House On The Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune – Utterly charming and captivating adult fiction book about an orphanage with some very, um, talented children. When a case worker visits to see if the children are being cared for correctly given their extraordinary talents, he finds much more at the home than he ever imagined.

The Queen’s Rising by Rebecca Ross – YA Fantasy with some intrigue and oodles of secrets. I love how emotionally invested I was in the intrigue of the waring kingdoms as well as the romance.

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston – This story has so much heart, I read it twice. And will probably do it again before the end of the year. The first son of the US hates the stupid, hostile and incredibly good looking second heir to the British throne. Or does he?

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson – I’m sorry, was that real?? This YA mystery is parts fictionalized Serial podcast and parts thriller. The murder is captivating and I love the additional fun materials in the book like the maps and interview transcripts. It really made reading the book more of an adventure, like I was also investigating!

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle – Those of us who love enemies-to-lovers will rejoice in this new twist of a couple who used to be in love and now are doing everything in their power to get the other to call off their wedding! It’s good to be bad! I love how they didn’t pull any punches with each other, and then how they eventually came around to appreciating the other person again.

Bringing Down The Duke by Evie Dunmore – Historical romance on a strong suffragette going head to head with a very stubborn Duke. Guess who wins… (Spoiler: They both do!)

Lessons From Madame Chic: The Top 20 Things I Learned While Living in Paris – The only non-fiction book on the list. I long for traveling and this fun and easy how to made me want to declutter some clothes and find my inner style. Oh, and start a scarf collection.

Well that’s my little list of Stay At Home books I’ve enjoyed these first few months.

I hope you are staying safe and well and for god’s sake WEAR A DAMN MASK. I don’t care how pretty your lipstick is.
