Review:
Powerful and moving, All The Rage doesn’t hold back any punches. And that’s what it does. Between Summers’ solid and heart piercing writing to the twisting cruelty of teens and clueless adults, the breath was stolen from me again and again.
The story goes back and forth between Romy’s memory of what happened that night, when she was sexually assaulted in the back of a pick up truck by the sheriff’s son to the aftermath of accusing him. And not having anyone believe her. Then when a local and popular girl goes missing, Romy’s former best friend, the events drag everything Romy had been saying to light.
Summers does a wonderful job handling the subject manner in an honest yet delicate way. Romy is a layered and soulful character, trying to deal with her world, now irrevocably changed, and who she is after the event. I loved her she compartmentalized the people in her life, trying to keep people like Leon who is so so sweet and unaware of her damage, away from all of the dirt in her small town. I loved when she fought back, when she clawed and screamed.
There is so much emotion in the book from the very beginning, it’s hard to put down. But it’s also so hard not too. The pain is truly there, on every page slowly stealing your breath. You can’t help but identify with Romy. You can’t help but understand ho dangerous it is sometimes to be a girl.
Overall, All The Rage is a book every mother should read with her daughter. It’s gripping and sad and hopeful. I’ve read Courtney Summers before and this just cements her fabulous writing and oen of the leading YA voices today.
