Shelf Candy Saturday! (29)

Posted May 19, 2012 by Kimberly in Miscellaneous / 5 Comments

Welcome friends to another edition of Shelf Candy Saturday!
Hosted by the wonderful Five Alarm Book Reviews!

I love book covers, and I’m not ashamed to admit many a book I have bought has been based on cover alone. Yes, I’m one of those. I always hope for a equally beautiful story inside!

Now, onto the Shelf Candy!

My Shelf Candy for this Saturday is:

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship of Her Own Making
By Catherynne M. Valente

Synopsis can be found here.

Isn’t it beautiful? The deep red book, imitating old leather. The golden embelishes at the corners. The whimsical and innocent picture of the girl, facing a very fantastical dragon, who has a lock around his belly. I love her green sweater and orange skirt, the dragon’s red devil tail and long thin claws.
And what I believe really draws you to the cover, is the lettering. Bolder in parts, highlighting the words Girl and Fairyland, the clear yet slightly embellished font. You can see the magic.

Don’t you want to read this too??

Happy Saturday and welcome to another Shelf Candy!

Thank to Five Alarm Book Reviews for hosting!

Please be sure to visit Five Alarm to see the other blogs participating in Shelf Candy! Totally worth it!

Now onto the Shelf Candy!
My Shelf Candy for this Saturday is:

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley
Synopsis
can be found
here.

I love this cover. The beautiful texture of the water as the backdrop. The auburn flaming hair behind the white uppercase title. The old fashioned W in the title.
And the model is dressed in this soft white, overlooking the sea.
Gorgeous, gentle and beautiful, I hope the cover reflects everything this novel has inside!

I have the book but haven’t read it yet. I picked it up specifically because of the cover. And bought it because of the synopsis.

What do you think?

I hope you will take a little bit of time today, visit Five Alarm and do the same!

And with that… onto my Shelf Candy!

My Shelf Candy for this week is:

Sacre Blue: A Comdey d’Art By Christopher Moore
Synopsis can be found
here.

I love Christopher Moore. His book A Dirty Job is one of my all time favorites. And so I’m super excited to read this book about Van Gough and Paris!

The beauty of the cover is lost in the digital world. See it for yourself at your local bookstore.
The blues and black of the cover itself shimmers in the light. The title and author is actually the dust jacket, only coming halfway up the book! The illustration itself is printed on the hard cover of the surface.
And best of all, the book is printed in a dark, rich blue tone.

I can’t wait to read it.

What do you think? Have you seen this book out there in the wild yet? And if you have, are you interested?

Shelf Candy Saturday!!! (26)

Thanks for Five Alarm Book Reviews for hosting this sugar coated fun!

And onto the Shelf Candy!

My Shelf Candy for this week:

Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce
Synopsis
can be found
here.

There is so much beauty in this book cover. The highlighted face peaking out right side up in the red. The mirrored identical face, upside down with the black hair. The eyes of the wolf and the swirls of the blending of the images. The faces are girlie, young and angel like in contrast to the dark menacing presence of the wolf and his stalking eyes.

I saw this book in Borders, yes Borders when Borders was still around, and I bought it right away. I was lucky that this was perfect for me, a re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood.

It’s not the fairy tale you remember. In fact, it’s much darker and more sinister than I was expecting.
A fun story with an edge. Like the cover.

Hello fellow readers and bloggers and all around nice people!
Welcome to another edition of Shelf Candy Saturday.
Thanks to Five Alarm Book Reviews for hosting!

Now-
Onto the Shelf Candy!

My Shelf Candy for this week is

Flight Volume 3

You can find more of Kazu’s art and graphic novels here on his webpage.

What do you think?Goodreads page here.

This is an anthology of beautiful graphic stories.
The main author/contributor/creator is Kazu Kibuishi. He is amazing! I’ve been buying the Flight series since I first went to Comic Con many years ago. What’s awesome is that they had their own booth and most of the artists were there and you would buy your copy of Flight and they would all sign it for you!
I haven’t been to Comic Con in a while, but I heard they’re still there.

Anyway, this is one of my favorite covers.
I have a print of it in my house too.

I love the overall green tones, the wooden bridge on the left. The way the tree house spirals up into an easy point to the top. The man and his companion bird approaching the setting.

I want to live here!
With my books. And Bunnies. And hubby. Doesn’t that sound nice?

Welcome to Shelf Candy Saturday!
Thank you to Five Alarm Book Reviews for hosting.

I love Saturday mornings. I like exploring what other bloggers find for their Shelf Candy! Be sure to check out the blogs particpating and maybe find your new favorite cover or book!

And now, onto the Shelf Candy!

The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey
Synopsis
can be found
here.

I love this cover so much and I’m not sure why.

Is it the blue and green soft tones. The use of white to highlight the girl, stuck on her stone island. The poise of the figure, ready to jump to another rock you can’t see or into the water. Either way, she’s on the verge of something. The grey uneven rock sloping int the blue sea or the yellow banner of the title?

It’s probably all of the above. I saw this cover and was immediately drawn to it. I love the light, airy feeling- the moment before the plunge.

Shelf Candy Saturday!! (23)

Happy Shelf Candy Saturday!

Welcome to Shelf Candy Saturday and thank you to Five Alarm Book Reviews for hosting this weekly fun!

Today is my birthday (!!!) so I’m going to pick a new favorite series of mine to share for my Shelf Candy this week!

My pick is…

My review of The Kingdom can be found here.
My review of The Prophet is coming soon!
What is not to love about these covers?
Amelia Gray is a cemetery restorer. She travels around the south restoring old, neglected cemeteries. Oh, and she can see ghosts.
I think the covers highlight the eerie beauty of these books perfectly.
I especially love the crying angel on the first cover. The blue stone tones and the black ivy growing on the grave.
I’m telling, you, I read The Restorer in ONE DAY. Didn’t get anything done that day. Had to keep reading. And the same for the other two. I heard there are at least another three planned for this series too so start reading now!
I can’t wait!
