Review:

Ella’s plan was solid, but that changes the night she meets Matt. Matt changes everything. And then he disappears.

One year later, Matt is back and he’s trying to recreate the night they had. Trying to recreate the magic of the night they said yes. But can Ella trust Matt again?

This sweet and romantic contemporary fiction is perfect for the summer. Ella fights with herself and the memories and hurt she experienced when Matt left. When Matt arrives back in town, she doesn’t want anything to do with him except answers. She wants to know why he disappeared.

The novel alternates between the present and the past, when Ella and Matt first met. I really liked that because it showed their relationship develop naturally, both then and now. And the parallels between each time. However, some of the chapters were really short and slow. I would have liked a longer period of time during each section and then flipping but that’s just me.

The supporting characters are all colorful and dramatic. There’s a best friend with a turbulent relationship so it adds some nice side story and comparisons to Ella and Matt’s relationship. The story is easy to read, floating with the characters all night through their re-discovery of each other. I think Matt’s motivations for leaving are a little thin and Ella’s a bit too eager to forgive, but the magic of the book is there and it didn’t really bother me.

Overall, The Night We Said Yes is charming and the perfect contemporary romance for the beach.
