Review:

Miriam is back. She’s headed towards Florida where a wealthy businessman has decided to hire her to tell him how he will die. At least, that’s why she thinks she’s going. But of course, nothing is simple with Miriam and dark and evil threads are wrapping around her before she even knows it…

Wendig does it again with this furious installment in the Miriam Black series. Miriam is angry, bitter and conflicted as ever, but this time she doesn’t have Louis to help her. She’s on her own, after having left him behind. I really love Miriam. She’s the devil on my shoulder, the bad words in my head. She’s the voice that I hear the split second before I pause and say something that’s ย more PC. Luckily, Miriam doesn’t have that problem and what she thinks pretty much comes out of her mouth. She’s hilarious, strong, edgy. She’s punch in the gut and then a drink of kool-aid.

I can’t talk about the plot really without spoiling it, but I will say that old foes are back. The Trespasser rattles around her head, taking grotesque and perverted forms just to get a reaction out of her. And the big bad? Can’t say. This is NOT a book to just pick up. I strongly suggest reading the other two books in the series first before diving into this one. Yes, the story stands on its own. But there are so many past characters that haunt this latest installment, it’s a better read knowing the back story.

Twists, turns and some fun gore are in store. And the best part? I really liked meeting Miriam’s mother. Yes, you read that right. Miriam’s mother. And all of the emotional baggage that comes along with her, made this book stand out a little bit more than the rest.

I read this novel fast, eager to finish it and see what happens. I mean, I might have read at all hours of day just to keep going. That might be why I’m so exhausted today at work. Might be. (It is.)
