Review:

Ava is a Firebug, a rare kind of creature that can generate fire with her mind. She is highly wanted, working for an evil society as an assassin. Trying to live a normal life most days, she is sent out on routine missions to kill threats to the leader Venus, a vile and evil head. That is until Venus gives Ava a mission too close to home and Ava and friends go on the run.

I’m always excited to read Lish McBride. She had me as soon as I began Hold Me Closer, Necromancer. Firebug, the beginning a new series, is just as addicting. Ava is exciting, powerful and a heroine you can root for. I liked her immediately. She isn’t gushy or mushy, in fact she has some serious problems dealing with any intense emotions. She also doesn’t like people seeing her cry. Girl after my own heart. Sure, she can create fire and wipe out an enemy just by imagining fire in their heart. What’s not to love?

Best friend Lock and Ezra are perfect side kicks. I love Ezra’s snarky comments, hilarious back and forth between the group ensues. Lock is the warmer, more thoughtful best friend. McBride has created a trio that is easy to see as best friends. You may remember them in high school or college. You may pass them on the street. You know, without the fire bit.

Ryan, Ava’s boyfriend, is charming and sweet and …. not giving that away!

I love that Ava has something to fight for. She fights for her guardian Cade and her friends. She fights for herself. You gotta love a girl who is going running into battle for all the right reasons.

Firebug is fun and a fast read. McBride has created a new world with characters that are a shade past normal. I love them!  The action starts and doesn’t let up. I also am LOVING the band of bikers they meet that happen to be… one of my favorite animals ever! 🙂 This is the kind of book you close and want to open again and read again.

I am only sad I probably have to wait a year to read the next one. It’s a promising beginning to a new addicting series.
