Review:

Jess has run from her past and the dangers that haunt her. She can never be who she really is. But when she meets Cas, something in Jess wants out. Because Cas makes her feel again. When passion takes over, Jess and Cas have to fight for what they want, including secrets he has been keeping from her.

The synopsis sounded good, and the cover is breathtaking, and those are usually two things that will propel me into reading a book. But for me, A Terrible Love didn’t hold me for very long.

The beginning starts out strong with intrigue, murder and danger. Jess has been through traumatic events that have changed her life forever, and I rooted for her. But as the book goes on, Jess becomes less of a sympathetic character for me. I know she’s been through a lot and she’s hiding from her past, but I couldn’t move past the sad fact that I just didn’t like her. I never got a clear voice from her, or anything that set her apart.

Cas is hot, rugged and looks older than a college student. And as described, has panties dropping for him everywhere. Of course he wants what he can’t, or shouldn’t, have and that is Cas. The scenes between them were sexy and hot, but I never felt an emotional connection between them. So by the end of the book when all hell breaks loose, and they finally realize that what they have is more than just sex, I’m sitting there thinking – it is?

The plot moves along, and the horrible step brother is a real scary demon. But many times, scary demons are more scary when they have reason or cause. I feel like Thad is evil because he is evil (serial killer evil) and ok, that’s fine. But I wish there is more to him because I feel like it might have been a more textured and layered story. There’s a “twist” at the end, which I think everyone will see coming. That was disappointing. No backstory or real history there either. Evil is just evil is just evil I guess.

I really wanted to like this book. I’m disappointed I didn’t.

Fans of New Adult will enjoy A Terrible Love. It has just enough sexy bits and mystery to keep readers interested.
