I don’t think I’ve made it a secret that I knit. Knit. Knit. Knit.
I’ve knitted since I was in college, having learned how from a magazine article in the then very new magazine called Real Simple. It taught me who ti knit a scarf. And that’s what I did, knit knit knit. Until I realized I could (gasp) do other things.
When I moved to California, I met a friend named T and she taught me how to Purl. Knit. Purl. Knit. Purl. I was set.
And from then on, the rest as we say is History!
Which brings me to today’s topic: Knitting Kits.
I do love me a good knitting kit. Sure, some times I like to choose all of my own yarn, every color, fiber, digging through my stash and matching complimentary or contrasting colors and textures. Sure, sometimes I like to wing it, not swatch (normally I don’t swatch) and see what I come up with.
But a lot of times, I find myself drawn to the already carefully thought out projects of others. I like seeing how other people use their creativity to invent and improve upon already existing patterns. I like seeing finished project. I find them to e inspiring and I like thinking that yes, me too, one day I could make something that amazing.
And in comes Knitting Kits. I have bought my fair share of knitting kits, especially these days since my daughter was born. I find it reassuring that I know what yarn/colors/gauge I’m probably going to get. While some may argue it limits my own creativity, I might argue back that there is something very freeing in buy-in ga kit where certain things are already planned out. Whether or not you follow exactly s up to the knitter and sometimes, whether I mean to or not, I don’t.
Recently, I purchased TWO very colorful kits from one of my favorite indie dyers Knitted Wit. You can find her Etsy store here.
These two are baby blanket kits.
And today, I was fortunate enough to finally use a PurlSoHo gift card I had (from like five years ago I kid you not) and purchase two amazing kits form them.
One is a gradient cowl kit in their own yarn. Free pattern here. This one is so so so pretty, and something I would totally wear. This one is for me!
The second is a very basic yet stylish garter scarf kit with some very luxurious yarn. Free pattern here from PurlSoho site. Garter stitch. Easy. I’m looking forward to some good tv watching!
I’m very excited to bust into these but I’m trying to refrain from opening them up RIGHT NOW. Mostly because I have a lot of projects that need my direct attention and also, because there’s some magic in the air with anticipation.
And, I have like A LOT of other things to knit before I break these open!
Do you craft? If so, what do you do? 🙂
I just learned to knit in December and tried to knit a few things… that didn’t turn out. I revisited knitting last month and make my first hat and some fall leaves to send in a care package. I love the idea of knitting kits because they do come with everything. Right now I’m still working on the basics and working up my confidence with knitting. I’m currently working on a brick styled cowl for my mom. I’d like to make a cardigan or lacy overthrow shirt for the summer but I think I need to work up to that bit. LoL Are you on Ravelry? It’s actually the first thing I learned about when my friend taught me to knit. I have so many projects saved on there and I love that you can type in a yarn (color, weight) and see all the projects people have made with that specific yarn.
You did! Congrats and welcome to the crazy world of crafting! Congrats on the hat! I am totally on ravelry and addicted! My username is Kimberlybuggie. Come find me! I am looking for you!
I have to be very careful about Ravelry though. It’s one of those rabbit holes…
Also I want to add that sometimes I feel guilty because I covet so many of the wonderful changes to patterns that other knitters do. It’s hard to decide on how I want to make the project my own. IT’s very inspiring!
I think kits are really fun, too. If I didn’t have a huge yarn stash I would probably buy a whole bunch of kits. Right now I am trying to knit from stash as much as I can but we will see how that goes…
I want ALL THE KITS!!!
