To kick off this awesome book festival blog tour, I’m interviewing the talented Mary E. Pearson today!
Your new book, The Kiss of Deception, comes out in July! It’s the first book in a new series. How does writing this book and start of a series differ from writing your other series Jenna Fox Chronicles?
Oh, it is very different! For one thing, the first book in the Jenna Fox Chronicles, The Adoration of Jenna Fox, was intended to be a standalone. Even the second book was intended to be the last! But my new series was conceived as three books from the start. I had developed a taste for vast landscapes, I think, after writing the previous series, so it was wonderful to envision this epic landscape from the start.
Do you enjoy writing series more or stand alone books?
Writing series is a new experience for me. After having written several standalones, I am adoring now, as I mentioned above, having a large canvas to tell a story with. It is certainly more challenging though. I have no doubt I will write a standalone again at some point when the right idea comes along.
Have you ever started writing a character and then, halfway through your book, changed the character completely?
Nope! By the time I start writing I have thought long and hard about the character. At that point it is THEIR story.
Do you have a favorite literary character?
Soooo many. Maybe Charlotte—clever, resourceful, hardworking—and she was a writer too.
What was the last book you read? Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers. It was amazing! I’ve already ordered Book 2, Dark Triumph , and preordered Book 3, Mortal Heart which comes out in the fall.
You are stranded on a desert island. Dr. Moreau, Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Frankenstein each stand in a boat waiting to take you to safety. Who do you choose to travel with?
Well, Dr. Frankenstein of course! We can compare notes about Frankie and Jenna!
How do you take your potato?
French Fries please! With ranch!
What do you do when you’re not writing?
Collapse. Chill. Work in yard. (I love being outside.)Watch some of my favorite TV series like Blacklist and Game of Thrones.
What are you working on right now?
Revisions for Book 2 in my new series. And lots of delicious author stuff for the publication of The Kiss of Deception in July! Busy, busy!
