hqdefaultHoliday season is upon us! While I do love to travel, I am not a good flyer. Planes make me nervous and I have to admit I am all for having some alcohol and medication before boarding that metal eagle!

Thinking about holiday traveling, I’ve put together a small list of items I like to take with me, wherever I’m headed.

In no particular order:

Kindle!

I used to take four or five books before I had a kindle and now I try very very hard to only take my kindle. It’s lightweight, portable and I happen to have way too many review books on there that I haven’t read yet. So I’m happy to sit in a plane for a few hours, away from the usual distracting habits, and absorb myself in some good solid reading time. I might even squeeze a review out too!

Physical Book

Okay, I lied. I usually do take 1 (ONE) small, mass market paperback with me. It’s in my carry on. This is for the absolutely has never happened before rare occurrence the kindle dies or does something weird while I’m taking a 13 hour flight.

Nap Blanket from Brookstone

When I was young (oh how many years ago) airlines used to provide blankets and pillows, decent ones. (They also used to provide decent meals as well but that’s another rant.) But if I’m on a loooong flight, I do bring my own blanket. My blanket of choice is this soft and warm Brookstone nap blanket. I love love love it. And it’s very very portable. Husband says he never wants a blanket, but inevitably starts inching mine over to him as the flight continues.

iPod

I know, some people keep their music on their phone but I’ll be honest. I have too much music. So I zone out with my iPod for five hours, usually with a podcast or playlist, and read. I usually catch up on some favorites or learn something new. What else am I going to do?

Knitting

If you don’t already know this I am a knitter. In fact, you can listen to me and my friend Thuy yammer on and on about knitting at our podcast Twisted Stitches.

So I’m happy to carry on a small project or two on my flights where I can get some uninterrupted knitting time.

Water

I bring my own water when I fly. That way I can drink as much as I want and not bother the flight attendant for water that she has to dole out to me in tiny bathroom cups I still see in the dentist’s office. Also, it gives me an excuse to buy really nice fancy water that I normally don’t buy. (see picture) 🙂

Laptop

I usually take my laptop with me nowadays for writing purposes, not for movie viewing.

Hand Sanitizer

I know, I know. But seriously, I usually want to just douse myself in it before, during and after an airport. Ugh.

Lipstick, facial spray and toothbrush and toothpaste

I know, I know. But usually I keep these items within reach if I’m traveling for more than 5 hours. A little lipstick and toothpaste can go a long way. And I love the Evian water spray. It just makes you feel a little bit better after you’ve been breathing that god-awful recycled air and the kid behind you is kicking your seat and the man next to you is hacking up a lung.

Also, much to Husband’s annoyance, I get to the airport ridiculously early. I eat before I board the plane. I buy a snack for later. And I always have my chargers within easy reach, just in case.

Do you have any travel tips to share??

Be safe everyone!

and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
